چکیده

As the outsourcing and offshoring phenomena have matured, the marketplace has sought increased differentiation on the basis of location through a range of ‘shoring’ and ‘sourcing’ terms. “Rural-sourcing,” “two-shoring,” “best-shoring,” and at least a dozen other expressions have emerged. Prominent among these is “nearshore,” which appeared in the software/IT field first in an article about an entrepreneurial software development venture established in the island of Barbados (Hopkins, 1998). Nearshore was presented then as a reaction to the main offshore destination, India, which was viewed as “farshore,” a very distant destination, many hours to travel, many time zones away, and a very different culture.

Non-Precautionary Cash Hoarding and the Evolution of Growth Firms

We analyze the trade-off faced by growth firms between hoarding cash (and delaying investment) and incurring dilution from external financing. Such nonprecautionary hoarding features a self-reinforcing effect: firms with better investment opportunities hoard less, yet grow successful and cash-rich more quickly. We show that non-precautionary hoarding affects the choice between public and privat...

Why do larger mothers produce larger offspring? A test of classic theory.

Across a wide range of taxa, larger mothers produce larger offspring. Theory assumes that larger, more fecund mothers create higher local densities of siblings, and so larger mothers produce larger offspring to offset sibling competition. This assumption has been debated for over 30 yr, but direct empirical tests are surprisingly rare. Here, we test two key assumptions of classic theories that ...

Competition in Healthcare: Good, Bad or Ugly?

The role of competition in healthcare is much debated. Despite a wealth of international experience in relation to competition, evidence is mixed and contested and the debate about the potential role for competition is often polarised. This paper considers briefly some of the reasons for this, focusing on what is meant by “competition in healthcare” and why it is more valuable to think about th...

Linked exploitation and interference competition drives the variable behavior of a classic predatorprey system

The potential connection between exploitation and interference competition was recognized long ago but has not been evaluated. We measured the levels of both forms of competition for the protist Didinium preying upon Paramecium. Across populations, exploitation intensity was tightly linked to interference intensity, and the form of this relationship follows from a simple model of interaction sp...

Intraspecific competition reduces niche width in experimental populations

Intraspecific competition is believed to drive niche expansion, because otherwise suboptimal resources can provide a refuge from competition for preferred resources. Competitive niche expansion is well supported by empirical observations, experiments, and theory, and is often invoked to explain phenotypic diversification within populations, some forms of speciation, and adaptive radiation. Howe...
